Preserving biodiversity within the built environment: actions, insights, and pathways forward

09 December 2024
The biodiversity crisis is gaining recognition in the built environment, with efforts focusing on understanding impacts, acting on known solutions, improving supply chain transparency, and learning from other sectors to drive meaningful change.

Awareness of the biodiversity crisis is growing within the built environment, spurred by initiatives like COP16 in Colombia, which, despite some breakthroughs (e.g., indigenous representation), fell short on critical goals, particularly financial commitments

Outside COPs, progress is being driven by businesses and organisations like UKGBC, which launched a knowledge hub on Embodied Ecological Impacts (EEI) in 2023 to spotlight the indirect biodiversity effects of construction

At UKGBC’s EEI conference, experts emphasised understanding organisational impacts on ecosystems, prioritising action over data, improving supply chain transparency, and learning from sectors like fashion and agriculture.

Collaboration and honesty are key to advancing these efforts.
