Renewable district heating can pave the way for decarbonised urban environments

Decarbonisation of urban areas can be reached through renewable sources, such as geothermal, solar thermal and systems on biomass and biogas.

According to Bojan Bogdanović (Principal Fund Manager of the EBRD’s Renewable District Energy in the Western Balkans (ReDEWeB) fund), heat pumps are topic number one in Europe. He urged an integration of sustainable heating and cooling with the electricity sector during a panel discussion at the Belgrade Energy Forum – BEF 2023.

Currently, only 3% of district heating output in Western Balkans is from renewable sources. Hence, he stressed how Western Balkan should do more concerning heat pumps and renewable sources, such as to engage with geothermal energy, solar-thermal energy, biogas and biomass which would help decarbonising district heating.
