Europe is characterised by many traditional and monumental buildings which are known to be energy inefficient, requiring significant use of energy and producing above average greenhouse gas emissions.

The Basilica of Santa Maria di Collemaggio in L´Aquila (Italy) represents an example where renovation and innovation have been merged. As part of the renovation, new geothermal heat pumps were installed, and radiant panels were placed on the inside of the basilica´s benches. In this way, the heat was going directly to people instead of getting lost in the air.
