The Retrofit Credits programme: Decarbonising the social housing sector

Antoine Pellet explains how the Retrofit Credits programme supports decarbonisation in the UK’s social housing sector by offering financial incentives for retrofitting projects that reduce emissions and create local social value.

In an interview in The Riba Journal, Antoine Pellet, Head of Retrofit Credits at the Housing Association's Charitable Trust (HACT), discusses the Retrofit Credits programme, which provides carbon credits to support decarbonisation in the UK’s social housing sector.

Developed by HACT and PNZ Carbon, the scheme incentivises retrofitting by offering financial rewards for emission reductions and social value. Retrofit Credits are verified through the VCS standard and integrate with the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard.

Pellet emphasises the potential for housing associations to reinvest credits into further retrofit projects, accelerating progress toward the UK’s 2050 net-zero target.

The programme also offers measurable local social benefits, making it an attractive funding option.
