The role of municipalities in facing the energy transition

Municipalities have an important role in fostering and implementing the energy transition. What tools can help them?
Giulia Leghissa

The EU aims for climate neutrality by 2050, with a roadmap targeting a 55% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, a 32% share of renewable energy, and a 32.5% improvement in energy efficiency by 2030. Municipalities play a crucial role in this decentralisation, requiring exemplary action in reducing energy consumption and addressing local challenges.

Initiatives like the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy (CoM) and national programs support local energy transition plans. However, barriers such as resource disparities and data collection challenges exist. The ePLANET project addresses these by harmonising data, digitalising energy transition plans, and fostering information exchange, facilitating a more efficient, cooperative, and holistic approach to municipal energy transition.
