Round Table on barriers to retrofit adoption
Energy efficiency in legacy buildings is crucial for achieving net zero goals, according to experts at a recent round table discussion. With approximately 80% of current buildings still in use by 2050, retrofitting for energy efficiency is essential. However, the lack of information and guidance on retrofitting is hindering its adoption. To address this, a round table was held, gathering developer, owner and operator participants and focusing on promoting understanding for retrofitting buildings and the integration of smart technologies.
The discussions highlighted 4 main points:
- sustainability as the driving force behind retrofitting;
- the need to prioritize efficient operations before major system replacements;
- the need to address a skills gap in the industry, particularly in operations and maintenance of smart technologies;
- retrofitting offers an opportunity for more agility, enabling rapid prototyping and informed decision-making.
Looking at the future, the round table sees collaboration and a holistic approach as fundamental to develop accepted principles, frameworks, and best practices for sustainable retrofitting.
