Round Table on barriers to retrofit adoption

Looking at energy efficiency in legacy buildings with developers, owners and operators
Editorial Team

Energy efficiency in legacy buildings is crucial for achieving net zero goals, according to experts at a recent round table discussion. With approximately 80% of current buildings still in use by 2050, retrofitting for energy efficiency is essential. However, the lack of information and guidance on retrofitting is hindering its adoption. To address this, a round table was held, gathering developer, owner and operator participants and focusing on promoting understanding for retrofitting buildings and the integration of smart technologies.

The discussions highlighted 4 main points:

  • sustainability as the driving force behind retrofitting;
  • the need to prioritize efficient operations before major system replacements;
  • the need to address a skills gap in the industry, particularly in operations and maintenance of smart technologies;
  • retrofitting offers an opportunity for more agility, enabling rapid prototyping and informed decision-making.

Looking at the future, the round table sees collaboration and a holistic approach as fundamental to develop accepted principles, frameworks, and best practices for sustainable retrofitting.
