"Salvaging": material reuse to rethink the buildings of the future

Over 35% of all the waste generated in the EU comes from the construction sector, thus it becomes clear the need to invert the trend.

The term "salvaging" refers to the recovery and reuse of materials that otherwise would have been sent to trash. RotorDC is a Belgian cooperative aiming to boost reuse practices and to support private and public building owners in renovation through reuse. The cooperative has also launched Opalis which is directory listing the reclamation and salvage dealers of the region.

Very important for the uptake in the market is to guarantee customers origin and quality of the reused materials. For this reason, Salvo, a UK-based marketplace, created a "code" and a "label". The researchers of the Catalonia Institute of Construction Technology (ITeC) are pushing even further this concept and aim to develop a European marketplace reserved for certified circular materials. This circular practices are part of Houseful project´s legacy.
