UN assistant secretary-general and head of UNEP Ligia Noronha, in her speech at the G7 Environment Ministers' session, highlighted the pivotal role of the building sector in combating climate change and biodiversity loss.

With half of the buildings projected for 2050 yet to be constructed, there's an opportunity to prioritize resilience, renovation, renewable energy, and low-carbon construction. This shift, particularly in the Global South, can simultaneously address social inequalities.

Emphasising resilient, energy-efficient structures is crucial, underlining the need for renovation and reuse in construction to mitigate environmental impact and promote equity. Key areas for action also include plastics, textiles, and minerals, offering potential economic and environmental benefits.
