Transforming the EU building stock carbon neutral with big data and artificial intelligence

The EU-funded DigiBUILD project aims to make the EU building stock carbon neutral by combining big data and AI.

More than 75% of the European Union's building stock lacks energy efficiency. Given that buildings account for 40% of EU energy consumption, swift action is imperative. Hence, accelerating deep renovations and increasing retrofitting (over 2% annually) are essential. EU officials have also prioritised reducing building sector energy density through directives and policies.

The DigiBUILD project, supported by the European Commission, aims to provide evidence-based decision support for retrofitting. Digitalisation, driven by IoT, AI, blockchain, and big data, plays a vital role in improving building stock performance. The project seeks to engage all stakeholders in the building lifecycle and implement integrated, data-informed approaches to achieve climate-neutral building stock goals.
