UK and Saudi Arabian AI-Driven System aims to drastically improve construction waste management

18 June 2024
The UK and Saudi Arabia face significant construction waste challenges, and a new AI-based system aims to enhance waste tracking and recycling, supporting sustainable construction goals.

The UK construction industry consumes about 40% of raw resources annually, with 20% ending up in landfills, contributing significantly to air and water pollution.

Reducing this waste is essential for meeting UN sustainability goals by 2030. Current efforts divert 13% from landfills, far short of the 99% target. Saudi Arabia faces similar challenges, with 130 million tonnes of construction waste yearly, less than 1% recycled.

An AI-based system is being developed to track and categorise construction waste, facilitating better management.

Supported by British and Saudi Arabian research teams, this system aims to transform waste management into a circular economy model, benefiting both the environment and the economy.
