The urgent need for sustainable and equitable cooling solutions in India

Severe heat waves and rising global temperatures necessitate equitable and sustainable cooling solutions to ensure public health and environmental protection.

Luca Papapietro

Severe heat waves in India highlight the urgent need for cooling solutions as global temperatures rise. Climate justice advocates call for access to cooling as a fundamental right. Poor urban planning and real estate expansion exacerbate heat distress. Air conditioning, once a luxury, is now essential, yet access remains unequal globally.

The demand for cooling will triple by 2050, raising environmental concerns. Sustainable cooling, involving energy-efficient systems and better building designs, is crucial. Initiatives like India's Cooling Action Plan, passive cooling methods, district cooling systems, and green roofs offer promising solutions.

Integrating cooling in building plans and promoting good AC practices can further reduce the carbon footprint and enhance comfort.
