Why energy efficiency renovation of buildings is key for climate change
Renovation of buildings is essential to reach decarbonisation goals. However, some countries are lagging behind, such as the UK building stock.
There is large energy efficiency gap in UK housing stock as many old buildings have very a low energy performance. Among them, 38% of the buildings have been built before 1946, representing a higher proportion compared to other EU countries. Hence, retrofitting existing homes in the UK becomes pivotal to reach the country´s commitment to net-zero emissions.
According to specific studies, the investment in building renovations to improve energy efficiency could generate up to £28 billion in economic benefits and support to more than 400,000 jobs in the UK by 2030. In addition there are other benefits that could be produced when renovating, such as lower energy bills, improved indoor comfort and air quality, and less carbon emissions.
