Why the way we build must change

19 July 2024
The construction and operation of buildings contribute significantly to global carbon emissions, requiring urgent adoption of efficiency measures, renewable energy, and sustainable materials to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

The global construction boom contributes significantly to carbon emissions, with buildings responsible for 37% of CO2 emissions in 2022. This stems from both operational (energy use) and embodied (materials production) sources.

Despite efforts, emissions are rising, challenging climate goals. Urgent measures include enhancing building efficiency, transitioning to renewable energy, and adopting sustainable materials

Investments must increase to meet targets. Governments play a crucial role by enforcing green building codes, promoting retrofitting, and fostering international collaboration. Addressing these issues is critical to achieve net-zero emissions from buildings by 2050 and align with the Paris Agreement.
