Energy-efficient retrofit for historic Córdoba building

The multi-family building in Córdoba, managed by the Public Agency for Housing and Refurbishment of Andalucía (AVRA), is a historic structure dating back to the 17th century. It serves as public social housing for rent.

The building's construction features load-bearing masonry of solid brick and wooden roofing, with environmental protection covering the entire structure. Retrofit solutions under the FuturHist project aim to balance the severe climatic conditions of Córdoba, ensuring both summer cooling and winter heating needs are met.

The planned interventions include installing passive solutions and active systems to enhance energy efficiency and occupant comfort. Internal insulation using carbon and biochar solutions will improve the thermal performance of the historic façade, while balcony doors will be restored to reduce heat losses and solar gains.

Efficient heating, cooling, and domestic hot water systems compatible with the building's architectural and social constraints will be implemented. These measures are expected to minimise energy poverty, improve indoor comfort, and prevent the abandonment of historic buildings, thereby preserving the cultural heritage of Córdoba.
