A study on two Italian residential renovation projects highlights how Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) leverage energy efficiency, lifecycle assessments, and green certifications to promote sustainable urban development and energy self-sufficiency.

Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) are a sustainable urban planning approach aligning with the EU energy strategy by integrating urban planning, energy, and construction sectors

Current sustainability assessments of PEDs prioritise energy factors, with limited focus on life cycle CO2 emissions and material impacts.

Neighbourhood Sustainability Assessments (NSA) and Green Building Rating Systems (GBRS) are increasingly linked to sustainable material selection. 

This study, titled 'A Portfolio of Building Solutions Supporting Positive Energy District Transition: Assessing the Impact of Green Building Certifications', evaluates two Italian residential renovation projects, proposing a classification system based on energy efficiency, production, and flexibility targets. Findings confirm GBRS certifications’ positive role in material selection, advancing PED development toward energy self-sufficiency and climate goals through sustainable innovation.
