EU building climate tracker warns: Europe is off track

20 December 2024
The EU's building sector is off track in meeting climate goals, with the European Buildings Climate Tracker showing a 40% shortfall, highlighting the need for urgent action, including effective implementation of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.
Editorial Team

The EU's building sector is lagging in its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, with significant gaps in achieving 2030 and 2050 climate goals. The European Buildings Climate Tracker reveals a 40% shortfall in key decarbonisation indicators, including CO2 emissions reduction, energy consumption, renewable energy use, and renovation investments.

Progress has been slower than required, exacerbated by rising energy costs and poor building conditions, leading to energy poverty affecting 9.3% of the EU population.

Decarbonising buildings offers job creation, health, and energy security benefits. Urgent action is needed from Member States to implement the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive effectively, alongside strong leadership from the European Commission to meet targets.
