Exploring sufficiency for a fairer and greener built environment

21 November 2024
The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) explores sufficiency as a holistic solution to address the urgent challenges of affordable housing and the building sector’s environmental impact.
Editorial Team

The building sector faces significant challenges, including the need for affordable housing and reducing its environmental impact in terms of energy, materials, and land use

Addressing these issues separately could lead to ineffective solutions. The European Environmental Bureau (EEB) discusses the concept of sufficiency as a way to address the social, environmental, and energy-related impacts of housing, proposing a holistic approach to tackle these interconnected challenges.

Sufficiency is 'a set of measures and daily practices that avoid demand for energy, materials, land, and water while delivering human well-being for all within planetary boundaries' - IPCC 2022.
