Green Roofs and Facades: biodiversity-positive design recommendations
The NetworkNature design brief series offers recommendations for incorporating biodiversity-positive design in buildings and urban areas. Developed with the support of ICLEI and IFLA Europe, the series aims to inspire designers to adopt an interdisciplinary approach and consider nature-based solutions for renaturing built environments.
Buildings are one of the key areas of focus: here, green roofs and facades have a high potential to foster biodiversity in urban settings. With extensive, semi-intensive, and intensive options, green roofs can mitigate the urban heat island effect and serve as sustainable urban drainage systems. Incorporating solar panels into green roofs can enhance their functionality and provide shading. The brief explores also green facades, such as modular green walls and traditional climbing green walls, which offer cost-effective solutions for integrating nature into buildings.
Read the design brief to discover how implementing nature-based solutions on buildings can contribute to biodiversity conservation, mitigate environmental impacts, and create more sustainable and ecologically diverse urban environments.
