Insulation opportunities to save energy for EU households

Editorial Team

This new study by Buildings Performance Institute Europe (BPIE) proves that the improvement in the insulation of existing residential buildings helps to improve EU energy independence and achieve climate-neutral goals expected for 2050.

A main factor resulting from the study is that the insulation of residential buildings in 27 Member States can result in a potential energy saving of 777 TWh. This means that 44% of final energy used for residential space heating in 2020 could be saved. To reach this, the current renovation rate of 1% must be at least doubled by 2030, to reach 3% by 2035, and 4% by 2040.
