Investing in nature-based solutions: new EIB - EC report
During the Network Nature annual conference, a new report on the state-of-play of nature-based-solutions (NBS) projects has been presented. Published by the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the European Commission, coauthored by Bankers Without Boundaries (BwB), Trinomics, and IUCN, the report provides a comprehensive analysis of NBS projects, insights from over 60 investment institutions, and a toolkit designed to enable public and private banks to foster NBS pipelines.
Nature-based solutions are cost-effective approaches that bring nature into building and cities while providing environmental, social, and economic benefits. As nature-based solutions are often considered "public goods", the private sector has limited incentive to invest. To expand the use of nature-based solutions and attract greater private sector involvement, it is necessary to establish conditions that enable a broader range of funding and financing mechanisms.
The report focuses on assessing the current state of nature-based solutions in the European Union, identifying operational and financing challenges faced by projects.
