Optimising building insulation for energy efficiency and sustainability: a BIM-based simulation study

This research, titled 'Evaluating the Impact of Insulation Materials on Energy Efficiency Using BIM-Based Simulation for Existing Building Retrofits: Case Study of an Apartment Building in Kanazawa, Japan', focuses on improving building energy simulation, reducing costs, and minimising CO2 emissions by enhancing insulation using BIM-based simulation

Architectural models of Japanese apartment buildings were analysed under various insulation scenarios using ArchiCAD 28. 

Five materials - cellulose fibre, glass wool, urethane foam, phenolic board, and rock wool - were evaluated for thermal and environmental properties.

The study concluded that urethane foam is the most effective and eco-friendly option. The research provides insights for property owners, designers, and contractors, offering a framework for selecting insulation materials that optimise sustainability, reduce environmental impact, and enhance cost-effectiveness in building design.
