RICS sustainability report reveals key challenges and opportunities for the built environment

In Q2 2024, surveys revealed rising demand for green real estate, but barriers like high costs, skill shortages, and limited progress on carbon emissions and biodiversity assessments hinder sustainability in construction, requiring stronger policies, training, and collaboration for progress.

In Q2 2024, surveys from the RICS Global Commercial Property Monitor and Global Construction Monitor gathered over 4,000 responses from professionals worldwide, focusing on sustainability in the built environment.

Key findings include rising demand for green real estate, with green buildings seeing rent and price premiums. However, climate resilience remains a moderate priority for occupiers and investors.

Challenges include limited progress in measuring carbon emissions, insufficient biodiversity assessments, and high initial costs of sustainable construction methods.

Overcoming skill shortages and enhancing education are crucial. Policymakers must establish clear sector-specific targets and encourage carbon assessments to drive sustainable practices and resilience.
