This report, ‘Heat Pumps in the European Union, status report on technology development, trends, value chains & markets’, provides an update on the state of heat pump technology in the EU, covering its application in buildings, industry, and district heating and cooling.

As of 2023, over 21.5 million heat pumps are installed in the EU. Sales grew consistently from 2013 to 2022, peaking in 2022, but declined by 7% in 2023 due to factors like reduced gas prices, economic conditions, and political uncertainty.

Barriers such as installer shortages and supply chain disruptions may limit future growth. Despite a sales decline, the European industry plans to invest over EUR 7 billion by 2030 to expand capacity and capture long-term market demand.
