The report assesses the technological developments of deep geothermal energy and addresses a promising development of deep geothermal for heat production in district heating.
The main problem with deep geothermal are still the up-front expenses and licencing issues. However the new urgency for measures to decarbonise heating in national and European energy debates may change this. In general, the EU maintains a strong focus on R&D and on innovative solutions for heating & cooling in urban environments and for high temperature storage.
