South Tyrol, in Northern Italy, is transitioning to a circular economy, focusing on the construction sector, which is vital to the economy but contributes significantly to waste and emissions. This shift is supported by the European Green Deal and local strategies, though barriers like regulatory complexity and economic constraints hinder progress.

A workshop held in Bolzano on October 2, 2024, with 45 stakeholders, discussed these challenges and opportunities.

The report - titled: 'Circular economy, construction and social sustainability: results and recommendations from a stakeholder workshop in the Province of Bolzano' - summarising workshop findings, recommends creating a “Provincial Circular Economy Task Force,” simplifying material reuse policies, adopting circular procurement, and fostering innovation. It also highlights the need for training and continuous engagement to drive momentum and community development.
