EPC Atlas: european energy certification map
The EPC Atlas is an interactive tool that unveils Europe’s energy mosaic: over 85 certification and smart assessment systems brought together in a single map. A digital compass to understand, compare, and improve energy efficiency in buildings across the continent.
The EPC Atlas tool, developed within the framework of the European project SmarterEPC, is presented as a digital platform that maps and analyses more than 85 Energy Performance Certification (EPC) and Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI) schemes across the 27 EU Member States. Its goal is ambitious yet essential: to facilitate the standardisation of energy assessment methods in Europe, offering operators, policymakers, and building owners a clear and comparative overview of the available solutions.
The Atlas stands out for its interactive interface based on a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), ensuring flexibility and system compatibility. While some functionalities are still under development—such as details on costs and regulatory compliance—the tool already enables users to explore the European landscape through a dynamic map and country-specific data sheets.
From an analytical perspective, the EPC Atlas represents a significant step towards transparency and interoperability in the energy efficiency sector. Its design, aligned with international standards (ISO/IEC/IEEE 42010:2022), reinforces its technical credibility, and its user-centred approach reflects a clear intent to democratise access to complex technical information.
Nonetheless, its true value will depend on the continuous updating of data and its ability to integrate user feedback. In a context where the quality of energy certificates varies widely between countries, this tool could become a benchmark for harmonising criteria and promoting best practices across Europe.
