Demand for heat pumps in Belgium decreases

Although in most circumstances considered more environmentally friendly than gas boilers, heat pumps are not yet cost-effective for home heating as gas prices stay low, according to a new study by Flemish research centres VITO/Energyville.

A recent study by Flemish research centers VITO/Energyville suggests that despite being considered environmentally friendly, heat pumps are currently not cost-effective for home heating. The shift in demand, driven by cost-saving motives during high gas prices, has now slowed as gas prices in Belgium are relatively affordable.

VITO/Energyville experts note that for buildings with moderate insulation, heating with a heat pump is no longer cost-effective due to lower gas prices. The study emphasises the financial perspective, acknowledging the environmental benefits of heat pumps powered by renewable electricity. Analysts also highlight the importance of improving insulation before considering heat pump replacement.
