A fungi-based insulation to be tested for sustainable building potential

The new Horizon Europe INBUILT project aims to test innovative natural materials, such as insulation made from fungal mycelium.
Giulia Leghissa

The University of Bath researchers are embarking on a Horizon Europe project called INBUILT, aiming to test innovative natural and recycled materials for sustainable construction. These materials, like prefabricated wall panels from waste wood and insulation made from fungal mycelium, will undergo rigorous testing to assess their suitability and environmental impacts.

Led by Dr. Steve Allen, the project aims to minimise the carbon footprint of buildings throughout their lifecycle. Alongside material testing, they'll optimise production processes to reduce environmental impacts. INBUILT integrates digital platforms for streamlined lifecycle management and showcases its approach through real-world demonstrations in France, the UK, and Germany.
