Harnessing energy from facades

Researchers are going to produce heat and electricity from external sources of the buildings beyond solar panels.
Giulia Leghissa

An experiment in Eindhoven, Netherlands, showcased solar panels that supplied thermal energy, not electricity, revolutionising energy use in social housing

The Envision project, funded by the EU, explored utilising building facades for energy generation, reducing greenhouse emissions. These panels absorb infrared radiation, offering a promising solution to Europe's energy needs. Coupled with heat pumps and batteries, they offer a sustainable energy source.

Meanwhile, the CITYSOLAR project aims for transparent solar windows, potentially transforming buildings into zero-energy structures. Research underscores the EU's commitment to innovative, climate-friendly technologies to combat climate change.
