How to improve European buildings' energy efficiency?
As part of the goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, the European Union has launched a directive to renovate 35 million buildings by 2030, but the energy performance of buildings still has limited influence on buyers' and renters' decisions. To address this issue, a project called "Towards Innovative Methods for Energy Performance Assessment and Certification" (TIMEPAC) aims to revamp Energy Performance Certificates (EPC) to guide renovations effectively.
The project aims recognise the different needs in different countries while incorporating additional aspects such as life cycle assessments and indoor air quality. Looking at the future, the new EPCs will go further from being just performance scores: they will provide advice on future building management.
TIMEPAC will also focus on implementing a building renovation passport that will serve as a comprehensive guide for transitioning the building stock towards zero emissions.
