What EU is doing to reduce energy consumption
Revisions to energy efficiency from 2018 are underway in the EU to align with the ambitious climate goals of the European Green Deal. These changes aim to reduce emissions, cut energy import bills, and decrease dependence on fossil fuels, especially from Russia. New targets for energy consumption reduction of at least 11.7% at the EU level by 2030 have been set, with gradual annual targets starting at 1.3% and reaching 1.9% by 2030. Various sectors, including public administration, buildings, and businesses, will be covered by local, regional, and national measures.
The European Commission's proposed updates to the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive and plans for a climate-neutral building sector by 2050 are emphasised. The goal is to make all new buildings zero emissions by 2028 and significantly boost renovation efforts to improve energy efficiency and reduce emissions in the building sector by 2030.
