Webinar: Understanding skills for a sustainable future: skills mapping

Editorial Team

On Thursday, March 21, BUILD UP hosted a webinar organised by ISSO ‘Understanding skills for a sustainable future: skills mapping’. During the event, experts and stakeholders delved into the role of skills mapping in the decarbonisation of buildings, sharing the insights and experience of four projects: BuildUpSkills Netherlands, Train4Sustain, Arise and BUS-Go Circular.

Amandine De Coster-Lacourt, Project Adviser from CINEA, introduced the topic of the webinar giving an overview of the BUILD UP Skills initiative. She highlighted that, the main objective of BUILD UP Skills is to address all the professionals in the building value chain. The initiative focuses on three main aims:

  • skills intelligence, to map the skills gap

  • skills development, to develop and upgrade

  • skills uptake, to increase the demand for skills and skilled professionals

The webinar was structured into four sessions. The first one, ‘Application and further development in H2020 project BUS-GoCircular’, focused on overcoming the challenges of the stimulation of demand for green energy skilled workforce by implementing a circular construction skills qualification framework. Martin Breen, from TUS, pointed out that ’58 skills and 38 professionals relating to the circular economy have been mapped in order to discover the skills gap existing in Europe as well as the current and future skills levels in each country'.

The second session, ‘Application in Train4Sustain CEN workshop agreement’, was led by Andrea Moro from iiSBE Italia, who explained that TRAIN4SUSTAIN is the first competence quality standard in the field of sustainable building to assess, compare and report the competences of professionals through a common European Skills Passport.

Enabling the clean energy transition

The two last sessions were presented by Jan Cromwijk, Project coordinator at ISSO.

The session ‘Application in H2020 project ARISE’ focused on BIM application and digitalisation, adding an additional layer to the skills mapping and qualifications in play. During the last session. ‘Application and further development in LIFE-project BUS-NL’, Jan Cromwijk explained that BUS-NL applies the PROF/TAC skills gap analysis in combination with the outputs of the Train4Sustain CEN workshop agreement. Jan explained that ‘the goals of the BUS-NL skills mapping is to address the skills needed to enable the clean energy transition, focusing on the entire building value chain and all the professionals involved’.
