Reflection: Meet EU innovators episode 3 webinar and the final topics of the SmartBuilt4EU White Papers
The smartBuilt4EU project has organized the third episode of the “Meet EU Innovators” webinar series that aims to present EU funded projects related to Smart Buildings and relevant to the topics covered by SmartBuilt4EU Task Forces.
During the webinar, seven projects were invited to highlight their main results, key innovations, benefits and lessons learned. The projects presented were:
- INSTRUCT by Irini Barbero from Cardiff University
- Sphere by Eduard Loscos from IDP Ingenieria y Arquitectura Iberia SL
- E-Dyce by Michal Pomianowski from Aalborg University
- QualDeEPC by Maike Venjakob from Wuppertal Institute
- BEEM-SPEED by Sonia Álvarez Díaz from CARTIF
- BEYOND by John Avramidis from UBITECH
- ARV by Prof. Inger Andresen from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology
The webinar aimed to showcase that the work done within these projects goes hand in hand with the SmartBuilt4EU Task Forces.
After a short introduction of SmartBuilt4EU, the webinar started with a presentation of INSTRUCT, which aims to elicit quantitative and qualitative evidence that corroborate and reinforce the correlation between skills and education and energy performance and quality. The project, which developed a one-stop-shop platform for training in the construction industry, powered by Blockchain technology, is ending in November 2022.
QualDeEPC and E-Dyce illustrated how they will enhance Energy Performance Certificates, in the case of E-Dyce by integrating real data and dynamic simulation. Data is also at the core of the EU project BEYOND which intends to design & build a novel Big Data reference architecture & platform powered by buildings to provide data driven services.
BIM-SPEED and SPHERE are two ending projects that strove to enable stakeholders to adopt BIM and BIM-driven Digital Twins by developing interoperable platforms. They provide interesting lessons learnt for ARV, a starting project whose objective is to boost the building renovation rate and to enable rapid and wide-scale deployment of Climate Positive Circular Communities (CPCCs) around Europe.

The webinar was also an opportunity for SmartBuilt4EU to invite the participants to review the latest White Papers released by the Task Forces (read topic B white papers) and to join the Task Forces to contribute to the last topics that will be addressed from May to September:
- Task Force 1: Responsive end-user that assesses tools and strategies to give operational feedback to the end-user (vs awareness) leading to behavioral changes.
- Task Force 2: Smartness to reduce building’s environmental impacts through improving resource efficiency; environmental impact management and the integration of renewable energies.
- Task Force 3: Data driven indicators such as the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI); data driven methods and the use of real-time performance data.
- Task Force 4: Education & upskilling subjects for instance: integration of IT & user-centric dimensions in curricula of academic and vocational education; support to the digitalization of the construction sector.
To contribute to the white papers, you can join the SmartBuilt4EU community by registering here. You may also join our SB4EU open consultation and answer our survey before 13/05/22.
