Architects in Europe: Rising numbers, gender balance, and sustainable design trends

The Architects' Council of Europe (ACE) Sector Study is a biennial survey that provides a detailed analysis of the statistical, sociological, and economic aspects of European architects and the architectural market.
Editorial Team

The 2024 edition compiled information from 28,000 architects from 29 European countries. It is the most comprehensive to date, covering new areas of research and setting a record for the largest number of participating countries.

The study reveals that there are currently 580,000 architects in Europe, an 8% increase over the last decade. Gender parity is just around the corner, with 45% of the profession being women.

Architectural practices are mostly small, with nearly 70% being solo operations. Despite the challenges, average turnover for all practice sizes is bouncing back from the pandemic slump, although inflation has taken a bite out of recent gains. Sustainability is becoming the norm, with 54% of architects regularly incorporating low-energy design principles. Earnings have risen to an average of €43,500, but the gender pay gap persists, with male architects earning 22% more than their female counterparts.
