Green bricks could slash construction carbon footprint

12 June 2024
Traditional bricks used in construction release high levels of greenhouse gases. A new study suggests using eco-friendly bricks made from recycled materials like fly ash and waste wood.
Editorial Team

Researchers from the CSIR- Central Building Research Institute in Roorkee, India, conducted a study comparing the environmental impact and performance of traditional burnt clay bricks with eco-friendly bricks made from recycled materials.

They analysed the carbon emissions, energy consumption, and thermal properties of both types of bricks to assess their sustainability.

The findings revealed that the eco-friendly bricks emitted significantly less CO2 and required less energy for production, while also providing adequate insulation for buildings.

Replacing just a small portion of traditional bricks with these green alternatives could cut millions of tons of CO2 emissions annually, promoting a more sustainable approach to construction.
