Promoting a comprehensive EU strategy for climate-resilient built environment

A BPIE discussion paper calls for a comprehensive EU strategy to integrate climate adaptation into the built environment, ensuring resilience, inclusivity, and local engagement across all regions.
Luca Papapietro

A recently published document by BPIE titled ‘Towards a climate-resilient built environment – A discussion paper on opportunities and priorities for climate adaptation in the EU’ argues that to enhance the EU's climate resilience, policies should focus not only on mitigation but also on adapting the built environment to withstand climate impacts.

It suggests the need for a European Commission-led strategy for a Climate-Resilient Built Environment, as current policies are fragmented and could leave some regions behind.

This strategy should ensure consistency across adaptation and buildings policy, promote energy efficiency, decentralised renewables, and inclusivity. It also advocates for a comprehensive EU monitoring framework to track progress and incorporate local input to achieve just resilience and community well-being across all regions.
