EXCESS project: cost-effective Plus Energy Buildings

The H2020 EXCESS project develops cost-effective Plus Energy Buildings (PEBs) across diverse climates.
Editorial Team

The H2020 EXCESS project aims to develop Plus Energy Buildings (PEBs) that exceed the energy efficiency standards of nearly-zero-energy buildings. The project focuses on four European cities to demonstrate that cost-competitive PEB solutions are achievable across different climatic zones.

PEBs produce more sustainable energy than they consume, resulting in an energy surplus that can be shared with other buildings. Until now, the implementation of PEBs has been hindered by factors such as lack of suitable technologies, high costs, regulatory barriers, and integration challenges. However, new regulations and the current energy crisis provide opportunities for the wider adoption of PEBs.

The project includes demo cases in Graz, Helsinki, Valladolid, and Hasselt, which represent different climatic conditions, with each demo case using innovative technologies tailored to their specific context, and, collectively, showcasing the potential for sustainable building stocks.
